MRI brain study will explore PTSD biomarkers in older adults
Much post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD, research has been dedicated to children and young adults. But what about senior citizens? Meredith Reid, an assistant professor in electrical and computer engineering, will soon add this missing piece to the puzzle.
Reid’s proposed research, “In vivo assessment of glutamate in older adults with post-traumatic stress disorder: a 7T magnetic resonance spectroscopy study,” in conjunction with the university’s Thomas Walter MRI Research Center, will utilize brain scans of 40 adults 50 years and older to measure glutamate – the brain’s major excitatory neurotransmitter necessary for cognitive function. Studies associate PTSD with glutamatergic dysfunction, Reid said.

Fruit, vegetable vouchers give new grocery store experience to Barbour County students
Justice Johnson and Hayden Faircloth walked into Piggly Wiggly, alongside their parents, with a $5 fruit and vegetable voucher in hand. After surveying their options, the two Barbour County third-graders walked out with strawberries and salad mix for dinner that evening. This interaction is not the usual business Piggy Wiggly in Eufaula encounters. However, thanks to a partnership between the store and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, more Barbour County students will be making similar purchases.
The fruit and vegetable vouchers came from Alabama Extension at Auburn University’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education program, or SNAP-Ed. This partnership started when Michelle Puckett, the Barbour County SNAP-Ed educator, approached Bryan Milligan, district manager of Piggly Wiggly in Eufaula, about the voucher program.
