The Auburn Office of International Programs’ International Cultural Center, or ICC, recently organized a panel discussion featuring numerous members of Auburn’s campus community in honor of International Women’s Day.

The seminar, “Embracing Women’s Equity for a More Inclusive World,” brought together students, faculty and staff with members of the community to celebrate women’s social, cultural, economic and political achievements. The theme was designed to help forge worldwide conversation about this important issue and its impact.

Adeola Fayemi, director of international education and inclusion, and Janice Clifford, director of the women’s and gender studies program, opened the seminar by educating guests on the deeper meaning of International Women’s Day and encouraging everyone to help forge an inclusive world.

Panelists included Elizabeth Quansah, director of Outreach Global; Silvia Vilches, Alabama Extension researcher; Tal Peretz, assistant professor of sociology and women’s studies; Hannah Bamigbola, master’s student in human development & family science; and Mekiyah Mitchell, an undergraduate student in biomedical sciences pre-pharmacy. Panelists discussed the impact of gender income disparities, along with the challenges in advancement opportunities and recognition for women.

Beatrice Allen, chair of International Awareness and Involvement for the Auburn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., discussed global efforts toward women’s equality and the organization’s plans to partner with ICC on future projects designed to bring cultural awareness to the Auburn community.

The ICC’s Window to Your World lunch seminars are designed to promote international and cultural learning in an informal gathering. The seminars feature an array of experts and thought leaders who discuss interdisciplinary topics. A variety of presentations and topics are offered, including research work, study abroad testimonials and career development topics for domestic and international students.
