Susan McCallister, Auburn University’s director of campus safety and compliance, was recently appointed to the Alabama Coalition Against Rape, or ACAR, board of directors.

The nonprofit organization works to prevent sexual violence in the State of Alabama.

“I am grateful for this opportunity to advocate for the rights of survivors, have an active role in public policy and affect critical change in response to sexual violence,” McCallister said.

McCallister sits on the 12-person board with colleagues from across the state of Alabama, representing a variety of disciplines, including survivor advocacy, forensic nursing, prosecution, legal services, research and faith-based organizations. Board members serve terms of five years.

As director of campus safety and compliance since 2017, McCallister serves as a member of the Department of Campus Safety and Security leadership team, is instrumental in day-to-day operation of the department and is responsible for collaborating with departments across campus on compliance programs to meet requirements of campus safety-related regulations. She has more than 30 years of experience as a safety professional, the last 20 of those at Auburn, working in a variety of roles related to campus safety, occupational safety and emergency management.

McCallister is actively involved with the Lee County Sexual Assault Response Team and the university’s threat assessment, crisis management and bias response teams. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Auburn in industrial and systems engineering, with a focus on occupational safety and ergonomics, as well as a graduate certificate in emergency management. She is a graduate of the Alabama Public Safety Leadership Academy and a Certified Clery Compliance Officer, or CCCO.

In a part-time capacity with a leading firm in the industry, McCallister also consults on campus safety compliance issues and teaches Clery Act compliance to other practitioners across the country. In her spare time, she loves to sing in her church choir, spend time in nature and travel. She is the mother of one grown daughter.
