Nan Fairley, associate professor of journalism, is a College of Liberal Arts Engaged Scholar. She teaches a variety of courses ranging from feature writing to community journalism. Fairley is the founder and current co-director of Auburn University's High School Summer Journalism Workshop. In 2011, she assisted Dr. Jennifer Adams with Auburn’s first summer workshop for high school newspaper advisers. She is a member of the Alabama Press Association's Newspaper in Education committee and has worked with the non-profit PACERS organization on its newspaper initiatives in rural schools and communities. Currently, she is working with CLA's Dr. Mark Wilson on the Living Democracy Project. She serves as chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism's diversity committee and is a member the College of Liberal Arts diversity team. She also serves on the advisory board for the CLA Community and Civic Engagement Initiative. Before joining Auburn in 1992, she worked for a variety of newspapers across the South. Her research interests include civic journalism, community journalism, and journalism history.
