Barb Struempler is a professor in the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Hospitality Management. She is also a nutritionist and program leader for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System through Auburn University. After receiving her undergraduate degree, Struempler worked several years in civil service in Germany and then began the Woman, Infants and Children program in Northwestern Nebraska. Following graduate school, she moved to Auburn. She has covered a lot of ground as her research laboratory and classrooms are the streets of Alabama, including the 4.5 million Alabama citizens. Her work specifically focuses on improving the high rates of infant mortality and escalating obesity and obesity-related disease conditions. During a 33-year career, she has secured more than $133 million to support these efforts. Struempler has been recognized with more than 50 community education awards, as well as awards from the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She celebrates this accomplishment with her mother, Josephine, and daughter, Lauren Schmidt.
