Auburn graduate wins Fulbright scholarship to Germany

McKenna Leckey, a graduate student at Auburn University studying social science education, has been awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship to Germany for the 2023-24 academic year.

Leckey, of Paramus, New Jersey, graduated as an Auburn University Honors Scholar in the fall of 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in social science education and History and a minor in German. Leckey will use her Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, or ETA, award to teach in Germany, where she will live for nine months from September 2023 until June 2024.

"I have wanted to teach English in Germany since eighth grade,” said Leckey. “So, getting a Fulbright years later to do that very thing is a dream come true."

Leckey looks forward to expanding her knowledge of the German language and getting to explore new cities. She is excited to eat a lot of German pretzels and to celebrate Oktoberfest in the country in which it originated.

One of Leckey’s mentors, Jada Kohlmeier, professor and program coordinator for social sciences education with the College of Education, explained that Leckey distinguished herself as an extremely strong student who always did “top-notch work,” even with her heavy course loads.

“McKenna is committed to enhancing democratic culture by encouraging civil discourse among students on complex social issues,” said Kohlmeier. “McKenna’s opportunity in Germany will enhance her cultural understanding of the country and lead to interesting cross-cultural conversations.”

The Fulbright scholarship is a celebrated educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. Established in 1946, the Fulbright scholarship is a reputable academic program that provides opportunities for students, scholars and professionals to study, teach and conduct research internationally.

“Fulbright couldn’t have selected a better teacher of English, and I’m excited for McKenna’s next adventure,” said Kohlmeier.
