Donors to Auburn University's Tiger Giving Day helped fund two "Plainsmen's Prep: A Bridge to Calculus" scholarships for incoming freshmen. The program gives them an opportunity to review pre-calculus and calculus topics needed to be successful in their courses at Auburn.

Designed for students who are entering a science, technology, engineering or mathematics field at Auburn, the camp fees are $800 per student. This year, with donations totaling $1,805, two students will receive full camp scholarships. The program will enter its second year in August, but this is the first year that funds were raised for scholarships.

"Having this scholarship available for students opens the door for those who may not have otherwise been able to participate in the Plainsmen's Prep," said Jablonski.

While the main focus of the camp is to help students in pre-calculus and calculus, there are also many secondary goals of the camp. It is designed to give students a taste of the collegiate experience. Students participate in activities outside of the classroom to build community and leadership skills and they make friends while adjusting to their new college life.

"Students who participate in Plainsmen's Prep have the opportunity to improve their skills and gain knowledge over the course of the 10-day program," said Dana Jablonski, director of academic support in the Office of Undergraduate Studies.

This year's Plainsmen's Prep: A Bridge to Calculus camp is set for Aug. 7-16. To be eligible, students must score under a 26 on the ACT or under 600 on the math portion of the SAT; test into Math 1120/1130 or Math 1150; and be in a major that requires calculus 1. Applications are due May 1, with 60 applicants being accepted into the program. More information is available online at http://academicsupport.auburn.edu/plainsmens-prep/.
