The Auburn University Department of Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts is presenting "The Drowsy Chaperone," opening Thursday, Feb. 23, at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of Telfair Peet Theatre.

"The Drowsy Chaperone is joyful and unapologetic entertainment. It celebrates theatre, particularly musical theatre and the ways in which it has the power to lift us up, take us to another world, and, maybe sometimes, heal us," said Daydrie Hague, director and professor of theatre.

Audience members are encouraged to join the show's narrator, "Man in Chair"–a misanthrope, recluse and world's biggest musical theatre fan–as he takes them on a hilarious tour of the acclaimed, and totally fictional, 1920s musical, "The Drowsy Chaperone." With its bad plots, stock characters and ridiculous send-ups of 1920's musical numbers, "The Drowsy Chaperone" is a theatrically self-referential tour de force, earning five Tony Awards in 2006.

Man in Chair shares, "I just want a good story and a few good songs to take me away. I just want to be entertained."

The performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone" runs from Feb. 23– March 4. It is directed by Hague, with costume design by Tracy Oleinick. Lighting and scenic design is by Travis McHale, choreography by Jeri Dickey, musical direction by Elizabeth Ann Benson and Collin Lowery, and sound design by Anthony Narcisco.

The student cast features Ian Downes, Hannah Spaulding, Jessi Rogers, Teyonna Johnson, Cate Rasco, Jackson Whiting, Garrett Bell, Dylan Renfrow, Tyler Carter, Logan Pace, Ben Strickland, Hudson Hubbard, Christopher Holton, Sydney Holpp, Kristin VanderWal, Diontae Black, Alex Patrick, Taylor Thomas, Sarah Beth Cumella and Kaylie Horowitz.

This performance runs approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
