2018 SEC Academic Conference

Mike McConnell, former U.S. director of national intelligence and Navy vice admiral, has been added to the speaker lineup for the 2018 SEC Academic Conference hosted by Auburn University. He will speak in place of Navy Adm. Mike Rogers who has a conflicting engagement. The conference, titled “Cyber Security: A Shared Responsibility,” is set for April 8-10 and will bring together top military and industry leaders along with representatives from the 14 SEC universities, each of whom works to protect our nation’s cyber infrastructure.

Ray Rothrock is CEO and chairman of RedSeal Inc., a company providing enterprises with a network modeling and risk scoring platform that measures and improves resilience to cyber events and network interruptions. He is partner emeritus of Venrock; and a member of numerous boards including Check Point Software (NASDAQ: CHKP), U.S. Department of Energy GAIN (Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear), Roku, Inc., Tri Alpha Energy, Inc., Team8, and UTIMCO, a $40B public endowment for the University of Texas and Texas A&M University. Ray holds a BS in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M University, a MS in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA with Distinction from Harvard Business School. He also is a member of the Corporation of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and his book, “Digital Resilience: Is Your Company Ready for the Next Cyber Threat,” launched in April, 2018.

Michael Fey joined Symantec as president and chief operating officer following the company’s acquisition of Blue Coat, Inc. completed in August 2016.

Fey served as the president and chief operating officer of Blue Coat starting in 2014. In this role, Fey focused on aligning the company's leading web security, encryption management, cloud offerings, and advanced threat protection solutions with customer requirements, and was responsible for all aspects of sales, marketing, support, services and product management.

Prior to joining Blue Coat, Fey served as chief technology officer of Intel Security and general manager of corporate products for McAfee, part of Intel Security, where he drove its long-term enterprise strategic vision and innovation in the endpoint, network and security analytics segments. An industry veteran, Fey has held leadership positions with Opsware, Mercury Interactive, and Lockheed-Martin.

Fey graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Engineering Physics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Andrew Case (andrew@dfir.org) is the Director of Research at Volexity. He received a Masters degree in Computer Science from the University of New Orleans. He has conducted numerous large-scale investigations across enterprises and industries. Andrew's previous experience includes penetration tests, source code audits, and binary analysis. Andrew is the co-developer of Registry Decoder, a National Institute of Justice funded forensics application, as well as a core developer of The Volatility Framework. He has delivered trainings in the field of digital forensics to a number of private and public organizations as well as at industry conferences. Andrew's primary research focus is physical memory analysis, and he has published a number of peer-reviewed papers in the field. He has presented his research at conferences including Black Hat, RSA, SOURCE, BSides, OMFW, GFirst, and DFRWS.

Bill Newhouse, Deputy Director of NICE, and Security Engineer at NCCoE in the Applied Cybersecurity Division in the Information Technology Laboratory at NIST.

For NICE, he leads and promotes efforts to foster, energize, and promote a robust network and an integrated ecosystem of cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development that can more effectively secure cyberspace and is lead author of the NICE Framework, NIST Special Publication 800-181.

At the NCCoE, he is leading the drafting of practice guides that address broad technology gaps in cybersecurity implementations that affect areas of risk in the retail, hospitality, and Federal sectors.

Mr. Newhouse promotes cybersecurity R&D coordination efforts as a co-chair of a federal cybersecurity interagency working group and as a regular representative of NIST at Federal cybersecurity focused R&D working groups.

Mr. Newhouse is a graduate of Georgia Tech and GWU and has been with the federal government for 31 years.

Glenn Gaffney served the US Intelligence Community for over thirty years leading analysts, operators and technologists to solve some of our nation's most pressing intelligence challenges. He began his career at CIA as a technical analyst studying the Soviet Space program. Building on his early experiences he spent the next decade working interagency and clandestine technical collection operations to address critical intelligence gaps.

Mr. Gaffney was an early adopter and pioneer in CIA and National level efforts to develop cyber capabilities and programs. During this time, he served as the CIA’s Chief of Computer Operations and eventually Chief of the CIA's Information Operations Center.

His years as an executive leader in the US Intelligence Community included two years as the Deputy Director of National Intelligence for Collection and six years as the Director of Science and Technology for the CIA.

Mr. Gaffney currently serves as an Executive Vice President at In-Q-Tel - a strategic venture firm formed in 1996 to bridge the gap between the venture capital community, the technical startup community, and the US government in order to discover and deliver ready soon technology that can advance our National Security, Defense, and Law Enforcement missions.
