Eduroam network provides secure access wherever faculty and students roam

A global wireless network between universities is giving faculty, staff and students freedom to access WiFi when their work takes them away from Auburn.

Eduroam is an international consortium that allows automatic, secure access to a university’s wireless network through the user’s home institution. Travelers have full access to other participating education or research institutions’ networks with the same high-speed, widely available capabilities on Auburn’s campus.

Academic visitors to Auburn’s campus can use their wireless devices to connect automatically to the eduroam network, providing ease of use and eliminating the need to create a guest account.

“Eduroam is another way for Auburn to demonstrate our hospitality,” said Bliss Bailey, executive director of the Office of Information Technology, or OIT. “Whenever students or researchers from other eduroam institutions visit Auburn, they are seamlessly provided with network access. No special configuration, no waiting.”

Gaining access to eduroam is similar to logging in to AU_WiFi. Auburn users select the “eduroam” network, and login using their university user id, in the form of username@auburn.edu, and password.

“OIT is excited about eduroam because it leverages the strength of the Auburn University wireless network and expands that access to hundreds of locations,” Bailey said. “It helps us support research and teaching partners by making their visit to Auburn easier and more productive.”
