Auburn holding annual cancer research symposium Aug. 25-26

AURIC, the Auburn University Research Initiative in Cancer, will hold its annual Cancer Research Symposium Aug. 25-26 at the Marriott Grand National in Opelika.
"The event is free and open to anyone interested in cancer research," said AURIC director Dr. Bruce Smith. "We invite presenters who would like to talk about their research, as well as any interested researchers or medical professionals."
AURIC was formed in 2012 and uses its private and state funds to award grants to support research among its membership. Based in Auburn University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, its mission is to improve both human and animal health by fostering an environment of excellence in cancer research and promoting research that enhances competitiveness to advance the understanding of the biology of cancer. AURIC’s membership is comprised of some 170 faculty and student researchers and involves collaborators from among nine of the university’s colleges and schools.
"Most of our membership is Auburn University faculty and students, but we also have members from other universities, including the University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of South Alabama and the University of Alabama," Smith said.
The two-day symposium begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 25. Lunch is provided both days as well as dinner on Friday evening.
"This meeting will give Auburn faculty the chance to put together new teams to investigate new problems, which is a great opportunity for all involved," Smith said.
The event is free for AURIC members; registering for the symposium provides membership and free attendance for non-members.
AURIC grant recipients will present the current findings of their scientific work to peers, including faculty as well as post-doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students. Platform and poster presentations will outline detailed results of ongoing research by AURIC members and informative sessions will showcase opportunities and facilities available to researchers.
A portion of the meeting will be devoted to familiarizing attendees with Auburn University resources that could assist their research, Smith said.
