Auburn University’s Cater Hall will be lit pink for breast cancer awareness Sept. 30

The eighth annual Cater Hall Illumination will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 30, to bring awareness about breast cancer to Auburn University and the community.
Cater Hall, along with Samford Hall and the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art, will be lit in pink during the month of October after a brief program on the Cater Hall porch on Tuesday evening. Guest speakers for the public event will include cancer survivors and Auburn University employees. American Cancer Society representatives also will be on hand to provide informational pamphlets.
The Cater Hall Illumination will kick off a month-long awareness campaign and lead up to Auburn University Mammogram Day to be scheduled for university employees, a joint effort between the university and the Cancer Center of East Alabama Medical Center.
The Cater Hall Illumination began in 2007 as a result of the Auburn University Staff Council’s encouraging female employees to take advantage of insurance-covered mammograms to test for breast cancer. One of the leading medical costs for the Auburn insurance plan was for the treatment of breast cancer, and very few employees were participating in the mammogram testing.
The Zeta Tau Alpha sorority was also involved with breast cancer education and awareness and joined with the Staff Council to get more students, staff and faculty involved.
