On June 5, the Director of the Office of Outreach Global, Elizabeth Quansah, alongside LaKami Baker from the Harbert College of Business, embarked on their annual STEP training program in Cotonou, Benin.

The program was made possible with support from the U.S. Embassy in Benin, the Benin Ministry of Development and the Institute of Cultural Affairs–Benin. This capacity-building entrepreneurship training provided more than 100 local Beninese people with the skills they need to advance in the business world–developing the potential of individuals as well as the local and national economies.

The five day training equipped participants with lessons in marketing, product pricing, branding, public speaking, team building and other entrepreneureal skills. The training sessions culminated with participants each taking one minute to pitch their product to the class. The room came alive with an array of products including soaps, shea butters, jewelry, snacks and pasta sauces as the participants applied the marketing techniques they learned to advertise their businesses.

Ghislaine Binzaon Satchoua, a participant who had attended a previous AU STEP training program, shared her positive experience and the impact it had on her entrepreneurial journey.

She remarked, “I began my business journey 4 years ago, and each time I receive training, I learn a lot. During the last training, I learned how to speak in public and how to present my product using key words. This year, I learned how to set a price and how to highlight the value of my products to my customers.”

With the help of the training program, she has been able to expand her business locally and said that in 10 to 20 years she hopes to expand her business internationally across the region.

The Auburn University Office of Outreach Global takes great pride in the positive impact of the STEP training program and eagerly anticipates its continuation in the future. The continued success of the STEP training program is a testament to the transformative power of knowledge and the dedication of all those involved.
