The final installment of the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment’s 2023 Spring Seminar Series will feature Peter C. Mertz, president and managing director (retired) of Global Forest Partners, on Tuesday, April 25.

Mertz will give a talk titled, “Sustainable forestry investing” at 3:30 p.m. in Room 2217 of the College of Forestry, Wildlife and Environment Building. Refreshments will be available after the seminar, and continuing forestry education certificates are available upon request.

Mertz is the retired co-founder of Global Forest Partners, a private equity firm headquartered in Lebanon, New Hampshire, specializing in sustainable forestry investments worldwide. He will talk about his 40-plus years of forestry investment experience, the transition of private forest ownership since the 1980s in the U.S. and around the world and his perspective on the critical role that forests and sustainable forestry play in capturing and sequestering carbon.

Mertz earned a bachelor’s in natural resources with a concentration in forestry from the University of Michigan in 1974. Following graduation, he worked as a field forester for five years in Hot Springs, Arkansas, for Weyerhaeuser Company before returning to the University of Michigan to earn his MBA in 1981. He then worked at International Paper Company until he entered the timberland investment business in 1995.

All are welcome to attend this program. Parking is available on the third and fourth floors in the South Quad Parking Deck, and advanced registration is not required.
