Auburn University promotes an environment in which people walking, using bicycles, e-scooters, skateboards and driving motor vehicles can safely co-exist. In the last year, we have seen an increase in the use of personal electronic mobility devices, or “PEMDs” on campus.

These are defined by university policy as “electric or motorized scooters, electric skateboards and other electric mobility devices used for personal transportation.” The university encourages the safe and courteous use of PEMDs, which are an efficient, enjoyable and sustainable alternative transportation mode in and around campus.

PEMDs align with our mobility goals by offering an alternative mode of transportation, however, the safety and accessibility of the campus for our community remain our top priority. Operators are expected to review and abide by university policy and, as with any device used for transportation, users operate at their own risk.

PEMD operators are reminded that the proper use and parking in and around campus buildings is important for the safety of everyone.

  • PEMDs may not be ridden inside of campus buildings at any time.

  • Avoid parking PEMDs in front of building entrances; on sidewalks, paths or driveways; or on accessible ramps to ensure safe entrance to and exit from campus buildings.

  • Do not leave PEMDs in common areas, stairways or hallways.

  • Do not chain PEMDs to fixtures or furniture in campus buildings. Plenty of bicycle rack parking is available.
