As the campus community begins to head out of town for the holiday break, Facilities Management is busy ramping up plans for several outdoor improvement projects.

“Our goal is always to plan each project to minimize impact on the campus community,” said Wendy Peacock, director of Construction Management for Facilities Management. “Working with our contractors to schedule construction while students are out of town helps us to accomplish this goal.”

The scope of each project varies from minor asphalt repairs on Heisman Drive to the beginning of a large-scale utilities’ infrastructure project on Quad Drive.

Construction details:

•Quad Drive: Quad Drive and a portion of Mell Street will be closed beginning Dec. 12 – Jan. 6 for Phase I of a utilities’ infrastructure improvement project. Access to the two parking lots on Quad Drive will be closed during this phase. Draughon Library and the Mell Classroom Building book drop and loading dock will remain open to authorized vehicles only. The accessible parking lot located on Quad Drive will reopen when Phase I ends Jan. 6. Phase II will take place Jan. 6 – March 11. Quad Drive will be converted to a pedestrian only concourse at the conclusion of the project.

• Heisman Drive: Two projects will take place on Heisman Drive through March 1. A section of Heisman Drive located between Jordan-Hare Stadium and Petrie Hall will be closed for asphalt repairs Dec. 12-30. Vehicle traffic will be routed through the Thach Concourse during this time. The second project consists of tree and landscape improvements in the Campus Green Transit Hub vicinity. A fence will surround the work area through March 1. The hub will remain open during this project.

• Plainsman Park: The Plainsman Park Rehab Center parking lot off South Donahue Drive will close Dec. 12-23 as Phase I of two projects begins with improvements to the parking lot and its entry. Temporary parking will be available in the Coliseum lot or Campus Green parking deck. Expect intermittent lane closures and pedestrian detours during this time. Pedestrians may enter the Rehab Center and baseball offices from the stairs located on Heisman Drive or near the Park’s ticket office. Phase II will take place Dec. 23 – Jan. 31 to prepare a site next to Plainsman Park for installation of the Frank Thomas statue.

• Dudley Hall and Commons: The Dudley Hall and Commons courtyard will be closed Dec. 12 – Jan. 9 as work takes place to renovate the courtyard. Construction flaggers will be in place to direct pedestrian traffic as needed. Pedestrians will be able to access Dudley Hall during construction.

• Ramsay Hall: The sidewalk in front of Ramsay Hall along Magnolia Avenue will be replaced. This work will take place Dec. 12 – Jan. 13. A pedestrian detour will be available.

• Samford Lawn: Expect intermittent lane closures on South College Street and pedestrian detours Dec. 12-23 as a section of sidewalk in front of Samford Hall is replaced.

Maps detailing the location of each project are located on the Facilities Management Campus Closures page.
