University Writing has announced the inaugural Ralph "Shug" Jordan Lecture and Workshop on Writing Instruction which will be held on Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. (lecture) and 2 p.m. (workshop.) This year, they will welcome Mike Palmquist, professor of English at Colorado State University and founder and publisher of the WAC Clearinghouse.  Palmquist will discuss “writing to engage,” which he defines as a kind of assignment faculty can use to push “students beyond their initial understanding of disciplinary content and processes to a deeper engagement with the information, ideas and arguments central to a discipline.”

After his lecture, Palmquist will lead a two-hour workshop to help faculty plan a writing to engage assignment they can use in a course. Participants are welcome to attend either the lecture, the workshop or both. Register via Qualtrics by Oct. 13.
