The Facilities Management Waste Reduction and Recycling Department would like to remind the campus community of the recycling drop-off site located on West Thach Avenue in the back of West Campus Parking. The site allows for accessible and convenient ways to keep Auburn’s campus clean.

“This location was chosen to help support the continued cleanliness of Auburn’s campus and the community around it,” said Joan Hicken, Waste Reduction and Recycling manager. “The drop-off site makes recycling easier for the Auburn Family.”

Acceptable materials for the drop-off site consist of mixed paper, plastics, aluminum cans, steel cans and cardboard. Additionally, the site has separate bins for recycling mixed paper and containers, along with a dumpster for recycling cardboard. Along the fence, there are signs that list these acceptable materials, directing users where to put their recycling.

The site does not accept garbage, glass, plastic bags or materials in plastic bags, as this will lead to contamination. Contamination occurs when the bins are not used as labeled or trash is mixed in with the recyclables. Using the bins incorrectly can lead to the entire contents of the recycling bin being disposed of as garbage.

“The act of recycling creates good habits and inspires us to develop new and better ways of managing and eliminating waste,” Hicken said.

There are many benefits to recycling as it turns materials that would become waste into resources. These benefits include conserving natural resources, saving energy, preventing pollution and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills.

“Simple changes can make a difference in reducing the amount of waste we produce and promoting a cleaner, greener campus,” Hicken said.

These changes include carrying a refillable water bottle, using reusable shopping bags and saying no to plastic bags and straws.
