Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, or OLLI, at Auburn University hosts a presentation by Harriet Huggins on the Be SMART campaign to promote responsible gun ownership and reduce child gun deaths on Wednesday, June 22, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill, 101 S. Debardeleben St. in Auburn. This lecture is free and open to the public. No registration is necessary.

Be SMART encourages parents and caretakers to take these five simple steps to help prevent shootings by children: Secure all guns in your home and vehicles; Model responsible behavior around guns; Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes; Recognize the role of guns in suicide; Tell your peers to be SMART.

Harriette Huggins is the Be SMART Lead for the Alabama Chapter of Moms Demand Action. Her five beautiful grandchildren provide inspiration for this work. She is retired from the College of Education Learning Resources Center. She volunteers in several organizations.

The lecture also will be available on the OLLI Facebook page. More details about the Be SMART program are available on their website.
