Greg Hayes, safety manager in Facilities Management, was recently awarded the 2022 Safety Professional of the Year Award from the Associated Builders and Contractors of Alabama.
“I was very humbled because this is an award recognized amongst your peers,” Hayes said. “I know the people who have received this award in the past, and they are all great leaders in the field of safety. I’m humbled, shocked, and honored to be recognized by the outstanding organization of ABC of Alabama.”
Each year, the Safety Professional of the Year award is awarded to one individual, making it the highest honor to receive. According to Jay Reed, president of the ABC board, this award is given to an individual who has displayed exceptional knowledge and service to their company, ABC membership, and the industry.
Reed touched on how Hayes’ dedication led to his win. Ultimately, his dedication to safety during the COVID-19 pandemic led to his nomination and winning of the award.
“During Greg’s two years of serving as chairman, ABC of Alabama experienced an unprecedented pandemic which resulted in an unprecedented amount of needs from our membership related to safety and health in the workplace,” Reed said. “Greg’s leadership provided an invaluable resource to the industry in a most trying time.”
Dan Whatley, assistant vice president of Facilities Operations, emphasized the honor of Hayes’ win and the value that he brings to Facilities Management.
“In a time where it would have been easy to put the group on the back-burner, Greg continued to push it forward and lead for the good of the entire organization,” Whatley said. “He is a hard worker who focuses on how he can improve things for our team here at Facilities Management. His presence on our team has made a difference, and I am excited to see where he takes our safety program moving forward.”
Hayes expressed gratitude for those who have helped him on his journey.
“I would like to thank Dan Whatley for giving me the opportunity here,” Hayes said. “Most of all, I would also like to thank my wife, Lisa, and children, Syd, Cricket, and AK for their support and encouragement through the years.”
