Jiwan Magar, owner and founder of Five14 Adventure Travel Nepal, visited campus this spring, to talk to students about the Global Perspectives in Human Sciences: Nepal study abroad program that will run this summer, as well as the social business model used by Five14 Nepal. Magar was a guest speaker in Intro to Global Studies, Global Studies Lecture series, Global Hospitality, and Global Studies Capstone. He also spoke at the student chapter of the International Justice Mission, or IJM.

Five14 Nepal’s goal is to prevent exploitation through ethical and responsible tourism and they achieve this goal through creating trekking routes and home stays in under resourced villages and fostering small businesses that positively impact the quality of life. Through the work of Five14, an area that was once known for being regularly exploited is becoming an example of responsible tourism to surrounding villages and districts. Magar likes to say that “tourism is the tide that lifts all boats.” Since Five14’s commitment to these villages, the schools have gone from 15 students to 400 students, roads have improved, and a growing economy continues to infuse the area, breaking the cycle of exploitation and creating a culture of hope and commitment to the future.

The Office of Global Education has partnered with Five14 Nepal as a commitment to exposing students to real-life application of sustainability and quality of life issues that embody the mission and goals of the College of Human Sciences.
