Platenburg featured on Zippia for career advice in journalism

Gheni Platenburg, an assistant professor in the School of Communication and Journalism, is featured on the popular career website, Zippia. Platenburg discusses the future of journalism, the skills graduates will need and how technology will impact the field.

Zippia is a San Francisco-based company that provides career information and tools for professionals across various industries. It employs a data-based approach to connect job seekers with companies and has been featured in USA Today, Forbes, Fortune, CNBC, the New York Times and more.

Platenburg teaches multimedia journalism courses. Her research interests include the Black Press, black identity, media portrayals and pop culture. Platenburg earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Florida A&M University and a master’s degree in community journalism from the University of Alabama. She later earned a doctorate in media and public affairs from Louisiana State University.

Prior to her career in academia, Platenburg worked as an award-winning multimedia journalist at both daily and weekly newspapers and television stations in Florida, Texas, Alabama and Washington, D.C. Currently, she works as a freelance journalist for The Washington Post Talent Network. She is also a member of the National Association of Black Journalists.
