As Auburn transitions into the summer months, several road, intersection and crosswalk projects will begin soon across campus.

“These projects are designed to make improvements to infrastructure and move forward with capital projects during the summer semester when they will have the lowest impact on the campus community,” said Wendy Peacock, Facilities Management director of Construction Management.

Detailed maps of all the projects listed below can be found on the Facilities Management temporary road and facilities closures page.

Road work and improvements:

  • East Thach Avenue lane shift: The eastbound lane, from South College Street to Gay Street, will be closed during the day throughout May as contractors work to install precast concrete pieces on the north and east side of the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center. Eastbound traffic will shift to the center turn lane while work is taking place during the day.

  • West Thach Avenue intermittent lane closures: Construction of the Harold Franklin Marker will take place through early June. Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures on a section of West Thach just east of the Mary Martin Hall parking lot.

  • Lem Morrison Drive closure: Lem Morrison will be closed for the summer beginning May 4 through August as underground utility lines are installed and a section of the road from South Donahue Drive to Biggio Drive is repaved. Employees who park at the Nursing School and Pharmaceutical Research Center will enter the lot via the entry off South Donahue Drive. Woodfield Drive will remain open and provide access to Hutsell Track facilities. Local access will still be permitted to the fraternity houses and the new Campus Rec SportsPlex via Wire Road.

  • Biggio Drive

    • A section of Biggio Drive from the Aquatics Center to the intersection of West Samford Avenue will be closed through May to run utilities to the Football Performance Center construction site. Motorists can access Biggio via South Donahue or Heisman Drives

    • Intermittent lane closures will take place on Biggio Drive from West Samford Avenue to just past the Jane B. Moore Softball Complex during the summer months as this section of the road is repaved.

Intersection Improvements:

  • Lane shifts will take place at the intersection of Biggio Drive and West Samford Avenue through July to implement major safety enhancements for pedestrians and cyclists crossing West Samford Avenue.

  • The gravel parking lot located across from the South Quad Parking Deck will be closed June through July as improvements take place at the intersection of Lem Morrison and Duncan Drives. The improvements include paving the entrance to the gravel parking lot and widening Lem Morrison near the intersection to straighten the eastbound lane.

Crosswalk Safety Improvements:

  • Activated flashing signs will be installed at the following crosswalk locations:

    • South Donahue Drive raised crosswalk between the Wellness Kitchen and South Donahue Dorm.

    • East Samford Avenue at both the Goodwin Hall and the Duggar Concourse raised crosswalks.

    • South College Street crossing in front of Ingram Hall. This project will also include a curb extension for increased visibility and will require lane shifts on South College Street.

  • Work to increase visibility will also take place at the West Magnolia Avenue crosswalk next to Biggin Hall.

Work will also continue for five capital projects.

More information on each of these projects is located on the Facilities Management Capital Projects page.
