As we celebrate Black History Month this February, the Auburn University School of Nusring will feature trail-blazing pioneers in nursing.
Mary Eliza Mahoney, born in 1845 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, was the first Black woman to study and work as a professionally trained nurse in the United States. In 1879, Mahoney also became the first Black woman to graduate from an American school of nursing.
