The Department of Physics used new telescopes at the Leach Science Center to take photos of recently discovered Supernova 2020jfo, which exists 52 million light years away in the M61 Galaxy.

Images were captured from the rooftop telescope terrace on the Leach Science Center. The telescopes are the latest addition to the 62,500 square-foot facility that opened last June to provide students an opportunity to operate state-of-the-art telescopes directly from a classroom on the third floor.

The supernova was discovered by the Zwicky Transient Facility in California on May 6 and was just the eighth supernova recorded in that galaxy—which is in the Virgo constellation—since 1926.
