A new department name has been approved for psychology, it will now be called the Department of Psychological Sciences. This change affects the department name only, and it does not affect any of the programs or the department’s location. It remains in the College of Liberal Arts and primarily headquartered in Thach Hall and Cary Hall. The main office is in Thach Hall.

“The new name describes the breadth and scope of scholarly activities, diverse course offerings and disciplines and programs represented within our department. Psychological Sciences is an inclusive descriptor as a rubric to signify the diversity of psychology-based fields represented in our department,” said Dr. Ana Franco-Watkins, chair of the department.

The contemporary update from Department of Psychology to Department of Psychological Sciences conveys a commitment to advancing the field of psychology through rigorous and transformative research, and to better reflect the diverse nature of psychological inquiry reflected in the department’s curricula.

Additionally, the Department of Psychological Sciences will serve as a foundational theme for advancing the department’s research portfolio through strategic hires, targeted recruitment of graduate students and increased national visibility, according to Franco-Watkins.
