Thunderstorms

Lightning

All thunderstorms, whether or not they meet severe criteria, contain lightning. Safety guidelines for lightning include:

  • When thunder roars, go indoors! If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning.
  • Stay away from telephones, electrical appliances, and plumbing.
Severe Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms are those that:

  • Contain winds greater than 58 mph;
  • Produce hail one-inch or larger in diameter; OR
  • Are capable of producing a tornado.

When a severe thunderstorm warning is issued:

  • Go inside a sturdy building.
  • Stay away from telephones, electrical appliances, and plumbing.
  • Stay sheltered until the warning expires and you no longer see lightning or hear thunder.
