Alcohol Poisoning/Overdose

If you are concerned that someone may be suffering from possible alcohol poisoning:

  • DIAL 911.
  • Don’t hesitate to get help. It is VERY dangerous to assume someone will be fine by "just sleeping it off."
  • Monitor the person for at least two hours after excessive drinking for ANY of the following signs, which may indicate alcohol poisoning/overdose.
    • You cannot wake the person up. They are not conscious and do not respond to pinching of the skin or shouting their name.
    • Their skin color is pale or bluish, or their skin is cold or clammy. This means they may not be getting enough oxygen.
    • They are breathing irregularly or VERY slowly or shallowly (less than 10 breaths per minute).
  • If you live in a residence hall on campus, contact your resident assistant or hall director for assistance after dialing 911.

If someone is unresponsive:

  • Start CPR if trained to do so.
  • Have someone DIAL 911 immediately. If no one is available, DIAL 911 yourself then resume CPR immediately.
  • Send someone to retrieve the nearest automated external defibrillator (AED). Continue CPR until the AED arrives.
  • Open the AED cover and follow the directions. The AED will walk you through either continuing CPR or delivering a shock if needed.
  • Continue to utilize the AED and stay with the person until help arrives.
  • See the online campus map for locations.

Important tips:
Turn the person on their side. If the person is on his or her side, they are less likely to choke if they vomit. Don’t let them roll over on their back. Leave them ONLY if necessary to call for medical assistance.

Don’t give them a cold shower, as it may cause them to lose consciousness.

Don’t give the person anything orally, including coffee, tea, or other liquid stimulants. Time is the only thing that can make someone sober.
