Publicly accessible automated external defibrillators (AEDs) have been placed in many campus buildings with high occupancy or a special need for such equipment. As additional funding becomes available, the AED Committee reviews new placement locations. Departments may also decide to purchase an AED for their building.
A yearly maintenance contract is in place to ensure devices are kept in good working order. Departments housed in buildings with AEDs are responsible for this minimal annual cost.
Publicly accessible AED purchases should be managed through the Department of Public Safety & Security to ensure consistency and proper maintenance. The Department of Public Safety & Security maintains an inventory of devices, performs monthly equipment checks, and arranges for annual servicing under the maintenance contract.
Although recommended, training is not required in order to use one of the AEDs on campus.
