Auburn Fashion Event highlights Apparel Design and Merchandising student work

As part of a team's Capstone collection, Christine Cameron showed lingerie on the runway at last year's annual Fashion Event at Auburn University. A few months and an internship later, she graduated from Auburn with a degree in Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production Management to become an assistant designer for Victoria's Secret.

Such talent on display is indicative of Auburn's annual Fashion Event, a showcase of style that highlights student work and the professionalism of students who plan and stage everything. This year's event will take place at Auburn Arena on Friday, April 20.

Katie Gardner, event co-director and a senior majoring in Apparel Merchandising in Auburn's College of Human Sciences, said there is a reason the college calls it the Fashion Event.

"We call it an event because it's more than just a runway show," she said. "We try to showcase a range of [Department of Consumer and Design Sciences] student work."

This year, attendees will once again see student-produced visual merchandising vignettes, created in conjunction with local Auburn businesses; e-portfolios and hospitality interior design displays. There will also be a VIP reception and a silent auction, proceeds from which will go to the Apparel Merchandising, Design and Production Management Fund for Excellence.

Many people will be there for the runway show — including the representatives from IMG, the company behind the iconic New York Fashion Week.

"People have gotten internships and even job offers from their Capstone work, from what they've put on the runway here," Gardner said, again citing Cameron and another Auburn graduate, whose 2017 Capstone pieces helped her land an internship with Martha's Vineyard-based Vineyard Vines.

"It's a showcase of the caliber of work we're doing here," Gardner said.

Gardner said the runway show will be divided into three parts, including the Capstone collections finale. First up will be general student submissions, then student submissions that match the event's theme.

Last year's theme was "Urbanistic." The year before that it was "Mirage." This year's theme is "Mod."

Doors will open for the 2018 Fashion Event at 6:30 p.m. at Auburn Arena. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or at the door on April 20.
