The Auburn University Department of Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts is presenting "God of Carnage,” opening to a sold-out crowd on Thursday, Oct. 19, in the Black Box of Telfair Peet Theatre. Performances continue through Oct. 28.

"God of Carnage” depicts two sets of parents meeting to discuss a skirmish that took place while their two 11-year-old sons were at the park. One of the boys hits the other, resulting in a loss of teeth and bruised egos. As the two sets of parents gather to resolve the conflict initiated by their children, the guise of civility threatens to dissolve into a rage of primal instinct. Yazmina Reza’s 2006 play invites audiences into this lively living room–and inside these modern marriages–to witness the ensuing chaos.

Auburn University Theatre’s production takes advantage of the intimacy of its Black Box space to recreate the intense events of the play. At times humorous and at other times devastating, "God of Carnage” pulls back the curtain on civil suburban domesticity to discover the raw substance that exists just beneath the surface.

"God of Carnage” was popular on Broadway, running for over 450 performances and receiving Tony Award nominations in 2009 for all four principal actors, winning for Best Play, Best Direction and Best Performance by a Lead Actress (Marcia Gay Harden). Following this success, the play became a mainstay of regional theatres throughout the country before being adapted into a movie in 2011 by Roman Polanski starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslett, Christoph Waltz and John C. Reilly.

The artistic team for "God of Carnage” includes direction by Scott Phillips, costume design by Claire Waid, scenic design by Matt Kizer and lighting design by Fereshteh Rostampour. The cast includes Cameron Carmello, Christopher Holton, Kristen VanderWal and Carter Price.

This performance runs approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and is recommended for mature audiences due to adult language and adult situations.
