Auburn University senior Matthew Rogers has been named as a finalist for the prestigious Marshall Scholarship. The Honors College student majoring in software engineering with the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering will interview at the British Consulate in Atlanta on Tuesday, Nov. 7. If selected, he will pursue a DPhil, or doctor of philosophy, in Cyber Security at the Centre for Doctoral Training at The University of Oxford.

Throughout the months of October and November, however, Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine students enrolled in an outreach elective course are participating in a community service program in northeast Alabama, providing veterinary services to underserved areas.

The latest numbers tell the irrigation story: In Alabama, only 15 percent of the land currently available for farming is irrigated, a far cry from Mississippi's 61 percent of cropland and Georgia's 40 percent. Over time, that lack of irrigation translates into huge revenue losses for the state's agricultural industry.

The Donald E. Davis Arboretum at Auburn University is taking orders for the fall plant sale. The plant sale features the Auburn Azalea series, which is a collection of hybrid native azaleas that were created through the efforts of Auburn scientists, faculty and staff over the course of decades. The azaleas are planted throughout the university landscape and come in various colors, including multiple shades of orange.

Dave Eggers, author of the international bestseller, "The Circle," will speak Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. in the Student Center ballroom. His talk on campus was previously scheduled for Sept. 12, but had to be postponed because Hurricane Irma was projected to move through the Auburn area.

Award-winning author and biologist Sean Carroll will give the Auburn University College of Sciences and Mathematics Leadership Council Distinguished Lecture on Oct. 19, at 6 p.m., on campus in the Sciences Center Auditorium. Carroll will discuss his book, "The Serengeti Rules: The Quest to Discover How Life Works and Why It Matters." A reception and book signing will take place at 5 p.m. prior to the lecture in the Sciences Center Auditorium Atrium. A limited number of books will be available to purchase at the reception. The event is free and open to the public.

The U.S. Department of Commerce has awarded Auburn University $118,000 under the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s, or EDA, 2017 University Center Economic Development Program Competition. EDA is providing a total of $2.7 million in grants to 22 colleges and universities in 16 states to run programs that will leverage university assets to promote American innovation and strengthen regional economies.

Texas health officials have reported 89 cases of West Nile virus in the state and three deaths as of late September, with 49 deaths reported nationwide so far in 2017. It is expected by the Center for Disease Control that this number will likely increase as the floodwaters continue to recede from Hurricane Harvey, leaving standing pockets of organically rich water pooling among storm debris that acts as a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Auburn University today joined the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center, or TARDEC, to conduct a live demonstration of autonomous vehicle technology traveling across the border between the U.S. and Canada. The capabilities of truck platoons were showcased traveling down Interstate 69, going east across the Blue Water Bridge connecting Port Huron with Ontario before returning to the U.S. The demonstration was conducted in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation.
