‘Historic Alabama Courthouses’ topic of book talk at Pebble Hill

Article body

The public is invited to a book talk by Delos Hughes, author of “Historic Alabama Courthouses: A Century of Their Images and Stories,” Sept. 12 at 4 p.m. at Pebble Hill.

Alabama’s oldest courthouses have witnessed a panorama of history. “Historic Alabama Courthouses” resurrects historical facts and images of buildings that were the centers of much of the state’s public life during its first century. Photographs of more than 120 buildings, the earliest that the author could find for each structure, are gathered in this significant volume along with historical, architectural, social, legal and political accounts of their contributions to the landscape of Alabama.

Auburn native Hughes is a graduate of Oberlin College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He taught political philosophy at Washington and Lee University from 1963 until his retirement in 1996. As emeritus professor of politics, he researches architectural history subjects. Hughes has published studies of courthouses in Alabama, Virginia and South Carolina; a New Deal homesteads project in Tennessee; and an early effort to design buildings for the University of Alabama. He is a co-author of “Lost Auburn: A Village Remembered in Period Photographs.”

The free, public event will be followed by refreshments. Books will be available for purchase and signing. The Caroline Marshall Draughon Center for the Arts and Humanities at Pebble Hill is located at 101 S. Debardeleben St. in Auburn.
