Auburn University Theatre commemorates 125 years of women with 2017-2018 season

Article body

This academic year marks the 104th season of theatre at Auburn University as well as the 125th anniversary of women on Auburn’s campus. The theme for this year’s theatre season—Letting in the Light—is inspired by famed theatre director Anne Bogart, who famously said, "Speaking a story can be an act of letting in light."

The theme recognizes the many and varied contributions women have made over the years both to the Auburn University community and to Auburn University Theatre. On stages and catwalks, in booths, shops and classrooms, women have made invaluable contributions to the vibrancy of the arts on Auburn’s campus. The Auburn University Department of Theatre’s 2017-2018 season celebrates this labor by showcasing the work of women playwrights and choreographers, alongside other works from the theatrical canon that tell women’s stories.

The first production of the season is "Antigone," a classic tale of the clash between the rule of law, familial duty and personal integrity. "Antigone" [pronounced "Ann-tig-ah-knee"] will take place on the Telfair Peet Mainstage and begins on Thursday, Sept. 21.

The character of Antigone has intrigued audiences globally, shifting and transforming herself to give voice to countless moments of political unrest and social unease. Auburn’s production seeks to continue that tradition and foster conversation with its audiences.

Jean Anouilh’s 1944 adaptation of Sophocles’ "Antigone," first performed in Nazi-occupied Paris, gave voice to resistance in the face of authoritarian rule. Antigone’s pursuit to bury her dead brother brings her into direct conflict with a new king’s consolidation of power. The conflict between Antigone and King Creon raises pertinent questions of authority and defiance and forces the audience to grapple with the very concept of justice.

The artistic team for "Antigone" includes direction by Daydrie Hague, music direction by Collin Lowery, choreography by Adrienne Wilson, aerial silks choreography by Jeri Dickey, fight choreography by Dan LaRocque, costume design by Tracy Oleinick, lighting and scenic design by Fereshteh Rostampour and sound design by Trevor Turner. The cast includes Falan Buie-Madden, Jessi Rogers, Teyonna Johnson, Logan Pace, London Carlisle, Kaylie Horowitz, Lauren Vedder, Dylan Renfrow, Cate Rasco, Hudson Hubbard, Myka Roach, Peter Strickland, Shanelle Valentine and Cole Denson.

This performance runs approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, without an intermission.
