Auburn University inviting the community to volunteer for this year’s student move-in

Auburn University is encouraging students, faculty, staff, community, alumni and friends in the Auburn and Opelika communities to volunteer on one or both of the two move-in days for students in August. The move-in days are Friday, Aug. 11, and Thursday, Aug. 17, from 6 a.m. until 3 p.m. each day with approximately 1,800 students arriving on Aug. 11, and 2,000 students on Aug. 17.

Volunteers have long been part of move-in. The Department of Housing and Residence Life staff plans for more community members to be involved with move-in this year to improve the overall experience for students and their families.

"Our parents and students always enjoy the interaction with volunteers, and they of course appreciate help moving," said Jon Waggoner, interim associate vice president of Auburn Auxiliary Services. "Move-in is the time when we welcome the next class of students to the Auburn Family. Please come out and help. It’s one of the most fun days of the year to be on campus."

Waggoner encourages employees to volunteer on move-in day.

Auburn President Steven Leath and his wife, Janet, will be on hand to help at move-in.

"Saying hello and helping incoming students and their parents on move-in day is a great way to show the Auburn spirit. Janet and I look forward to it," said Leath.

This year, the designated volunteer stations will be indoors, so volunteers can take breaks from the heat. The stations will have breakfast, lunch, snacks and beverages available for volunteers.

All volunteers will be given T-shirts. Several new and exciting additions to the overall move-in experience are planned. Various special guests will be appearing at move-in locations to meet the students and their parents. Aubie will also be on campus riding in his golf cart and handing out prizes provided by local stores.

Food trucks such as Kona Ice, Smooth-N-Groove and others will be on campus for students, parents and volunteers. The trucks will be accepting cash or cards.

Auburn University’s student-operated radio station, WEGL 91.1 FM, is setting up a live broadcast on campus where move-in information will be shared throughout their broadcast. Families are encouraged to listen to WEGL while driving to campus.

"We want the move-in days this year to have the excitement and energy of Camp War Eagle," said Waggoner.

The Department of Housing and Residence Life’s move-in guidebook is available to download for students and their families to learn more information about moving into the residence halls. The volunteer application is also now available online.
