Auburn University Theatre opens 2016-17 season with ‘The Foreigner’

The Auburn University Theatre in the College of Liberal Arts opens its 103rd season of theater with the farcical play "The Foreigner" on Thursday, Sept. 22, at 7:30 p.m. on the main stage of Telfair Peet Theatre.
"While I've always loved the play, it's even more enjoyable to see students engage with it for the first time," said Dan LaRocque, professor of theatre in the College of Liberal Arts and the show's director. "We have an all student cast and a design and production team that includes several students with major assignments and it's really rewarding to see them take ownership of the process and invest so much effort and enthusiasm into bringing the play to life. It's been a joy to spend the last several weeks working on such a hilarious and heartwarming play with such talented colleagues and students."
"The Foreigner" by Larry Shue is about a painfully shy and reclusive Englishman, Charlie Baker, who comes to stay at a rural Georgia fishing lodge. The locals come to believe that he is an "exotic" foreigner who doesn't speak a word of English.
"The play has always been a favorite of mine for its sheer comic genius, but its focus on hospitality, kindness and inclusion seems particularly resonant in the context of our current times," LaRocque said.
This production, a winner of two Obie and Outer Critics Circle Awards, is a perennial favorite of the American stage. The play includes good ol' boys, xenophobia and basic human decency.
The artistic team for "The Foreigner" includes direction by Dan LaRocque, lighting design by Fereshteh Rostampour, scenic design by student MeJah Balems and sound design by student Cheyenne Dalton. The cast consists of Auburn University students Jared Haley, Hudson Hubbard, Taylor Newton, Cate Rasco, Michael Sanders, Benjamin Strickland and Hannah Spaulding.
Show dates are Sept. 22-23 and 27-30 at 7:30 p.m. with matinees on Sunday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Oct. 1 at 2:30 p.m. This performance runs approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes.
This year, audience members wanting to learn more about each show or give their opinions are invited to join the director and company members after the performance on "Talkback Thursdays."
