Auburn University Department of Public Safety & Security's interim executive director Chance Corbett graduated from the inaugural Alabama Public Safety Leadership Academy on Friday, May 20. He was one of 25 participants chosen to participate in the nine-month leadership program from a broad pool of applicants representing all public safety fields. Corbett was also elected by the inaugural class as the class president and will assist other state public safety leaders in choosing participants for the second session, which is set to begin later this year.

The Alabama Public Safety Leadership Academy was created through a partnership with the Alabama Fire College, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency, Alabama Emergency Management Agency and other public safety organizations in an effort to provide information and training for current and emerging leaders in the public safety profession throughout the state of Alabama.

The nine-month interdisciplinary experience covered topics such as public finance/budgeting, communications/media relations, ethics, coordination of major events, human resource management, legislative process/governmental affairs and strategic management. Courses were held once a month in different locations throughout the state to expose participants to leaders in the field and showcase innovative programs. Auburn University's Department of Public Safety & Security has been asked to host one of the second session training dates.

Along with a certificate of completion, each graduate received a commendation from Gov. Robert Bentley and a numbered challenge coin for helping shape the program as the inaugural class.
