Video board sound test to begin at Jordan-Hare Stadium Aug. 15

An array of sounds ranging from pink noise to music by the Black Eyed Peas will resonate from Jordan-Hare Stadium Aug. 15-21 as Auburn University tests the audio system for its new video board.

"Audio testing is a critical part of the video board system construction process" said Gregory Forthofer, Auburn University Facilities Management design project manager. "Daktronics will use these tests to fine-tune the sound system and ensure peak performance for game days this fall."

During the test dates, Daktronics Inc., Auburn's video board audio-visual systems contractor, will run tests between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. The first test phase will take place Saturday, Aug. 15, and Sunday, Aug. 16, with two days of pink noise – which is similar to TV static noise.

"Pink noise is a mixture of sound waves used to test and calibrate audio systems," Forthofer said. "The sound has been compared to that of pouring rain falling on pavement."

During the week of Aug. 17, the sound will transition to low-level testing. Daktronics will use music and excerpts from books on tape during the low-level test phase. System engineers will crank up the volume for one hour the evening of Aug. 21 for loud-level tests, which will reach near game day volume.

According to Forthofer, the tests will be heard outside of the stadium, but it isn't known at this time exactly how far outside of the stadium audio may reach.

Auburn University's Facilities Management Department has been working to notify campus officials and the City of Auburn regarding this test phase.

The new video board, slated to be the largest college score board in the nation, is scheduled to make its debut when Auburn kicks off against Jacksonville State on Sept. 12.
