The Alabama Natural Resources Council will host its annual outreach symposium and awards banquet on Friday, Feb. 6, at the Marriott Prattville Hotel and Conference Center off Interstate 65 north of Montgomery. The public event will provide landowners and professionals across natural resources disciplines with information and also honor those who practice wise stewardship of the state's natural resources.

Auburn University's Involvement Ambassadors have launched the "This is Why" campaign to showcase student organizations and encourage students to get involved. The campaign will be a semester-long series of events extending from January to April, with each month focusing on a different aspect of involvement on Auburn's campus. To kick off the campaign and Organizations Week, the first theme is "New Year, New You."

York Distinguished Lecturer Series, in conjunction with Auburn University's Littleton-Franklin Lectures, will present Nobel Prize recipient Jack Szostak, a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School delivering a lecture titled "The Origins of Cellular Life" Tuesday, Feb. 10, at 4 p.m. in 113 A Lowder Business Building.

Farm-raised oysters, one of the hottest items on the menus of the South's trendiest restaurants, will take center stage at the first-ever Alabama Oyster Social hosted by Chef David Bancroft of Acre restaurant in Auburn on Friday, Jan. 30. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Auburn University School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences, SFAAS, and their on-going efforts to establish oyster farming on the Gulf Coast.

The Auburn University Museum of Natural History has initiated a new program, "First Wednesdays," providing an opportunity for the community to explore the approximately two million specimens found in the museum's eight collections. On the first Wednesday of every month, tours are available by appointment from 4 to 6 p.m. During the tour, items from the museum's collections will be on display and staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Auburn University will hold the eighth annual Boshell Diabetes Research Day on Friday, Feb. 13, at The Hotel at Auburn University and Dixon Conference Center. The event will bring together experts from around the United States to present current topics related to diabetes, a disease that affects nearly 30 million Americans, and the role of obesity in its development.

COSAM alumnus Samuel Pettijohn, physics '67, was one of only seven African-American students when he was enrolled at Auburn University. A native of Cornelia, Ga., he was the first African-American undergraduate student to receive a degree from Auburn, and in January 2013, in celebration of 50 years of integration, he was recognized for his culture-changing achievement during a ceremony hosted by the university.

The Auburn University Honors College kicks off its k(no)w poverty? Lecture Series Jan. 22 in 2370 Haley Center at 6 p.m. Michael Lynch, managing director of Project Horseshoe Farm in Greensboro, Alabama, will give a public talk on "Poverty In The Black Belt: A Complex Issue And A Grassroots Initiative To Help Support Vulnerable Members Of The Community." The lecture series is an opportunity to discuss issues relevant to poverty in the community, region, state and world. Participants are asked to bring non-perishable food items for the Campus Food Pantry.

Artist and 2014 MacArthur Fellow Rick Lowe returns to his native Alabama this January as the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts' spring 2015 Breeden Scholar in Residence. With formal training in the visual arts, Lowe has worked for the past 20 years both inside and outside art-world institutions by participating in exhibitions and developing community-based art projects.

Chicago-based artist John Himmelfarb's exhibition, "TRUCKS," will be on view at Auburn University's Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art from Saturday, Jan. 24, through Sunday, May 10. The survey of work, more than a decade in the making, showcases the iconic image of trucks as represented in painting, drawing, sculpture and printmaking.

Auburn University will host a week-long tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Monday through Friday, Jan. 19-23, to commemorate the late civil rights icon's life and legacy. Events throughout the week will reflect the theme, "Injustice Anywhere is a Threat to Justice Everywhere." In observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Auburn University campus will be closed Monday, Jan. 19.
