The Veterans Resource Center at Auburn University will host a Veterans and Family Resource Expo on Saturday, Nov. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Auburn University Arena.

The event will provide information about the activities conducted by the Veterans Resource Center and the many ways the group serves veterans. The general public is invited, and those who are veterans or who have a family member who is a veteran are encouraged to attend.

"This event is critical because many veterans suffer through economically- and health-related situations, not knowing there may be resources to help alleviate some of their issues," said the center's director, Johnny Green. "For example, we see and talk to many veterans who don't know if the poor health they may be experiencing is related to their service. Often times it is, and even when they are not ill, many will qualify for other services and programs, including health care, education, home loans and careers."

Green said the event is also a way for the local community to demonstrate its continued support for veterans through service.

"We hope that not only will more people learn about us, but will spread the word and encourage other veterans to contact us," Green said. "This event will provide an atmosphere of informality which allows people to ask questions and not feel intimidated, as it is sometimes the case when individuals seek this type of information."

Veterans and their families can expect to see activities for children, ranging from a bouncy house to a USA Team Handball match. The center will provide concessions such as barbeque and popcorn.

USA Team Handball will hold a free exhibition match with the Army Women's Team Handball at noon in the Auburn University Coliseum, directly across from the Arena.

Providers will conduct various screenings, including those for traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. Information also will be available from a variety of agencies, such as the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care Agency in Tuskegee.

"The primary focus is to educate veterans, their families and the general public and to provide information about local programs and services for local veterans and their families," Green said.
