Free cardboard boxes available for faculty, staff and students

AUBURN, Ala. - The Waste Reduction and Recycling Department is collaborating with the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative, or AMSTI, to give away about 400 sturdy cardboard box shipping containers to be reused for storage. The boxes are available to Auburn University faculty, staff and students.

The boxes were originally used as shipping containers for AMSTI education kits.

“All of the boxes have been housed in AMSTI’s indoor facility and are in excellent condition,” said Vic Walker, manager of facilities management building services operations. “Instead of discarding the boxes, we are working with AMSTI to give them to the Auburn Family for reuse. They make great storage containers for use in dorm rooms, offices and at home.”

The boxes are two sizes. There are approximately 44 boxes that are 16½” x 23¼” x 8½” and more than 340 of the larger 16½” x 23¼” x 12” size.

Boxes will be available for pick-up on Jan. 31, 8:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the AMSTI facility located at 1900 Cunningham Drive, Opelika.

“It is our hope that all the boxes are reused,” Walker said. “Reuse allows products to be used to their fullest extent and makes economic and environmental sense. The benefits of waste reduction and recycling include conserving natural resources, saving energy, preventing pollution, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills."

For more information or to reserve boxes, contact the Facilities Management Waste Reduction and Recycling Department at 844-9461 by Jan. 30.

Photos of the boxes can be viewed online.
