The College of Liberal Arts is hosting Eric Foner, retired professor of history at Columbia University, to give his talk “The Second Founding: How the Civil War and Reconstruction Changed the Constitution.” The event will be held in Langdon Hall Tuesday, Oct. 31, 4 p.m.

Recently retired, Foner was the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University. Author of many books, the most noted include “Free Soil, Free Labor, Free Men: The Ideology of the Republican Party Before the Civil War” and “Nothing But Freedom: Emancipation and Its Legacy and Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877.” In addition, he received Bancroft and Pulitzer prizes in the same year, as well as many other awards. He has served as president of two major history societies and has published a free online course, “The Civil War and Reconstruction.” Learn more about Foner on his website.
