Five Auburn University music majors took home nine awards – three first-place and six second-place wins – at the Alabama NATS auditions at Birmingham-Southern College on Feb. 17–18.

The annual competition is sponsored by the Alabama chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and includes singers from all collegiate voice programs throughout the state of Alabama. The students are baritone Philip McCown (2nd place, sophomore classical men and 2nd place, sophomore musical theatre men); soprano Claudia Affan (2nd place, freshmen classical women and 2nd place, freshmen musical theatre women); tenor Jacob Verhine (1st place, sophomore classical men); soprano Patty Holley (1st place, junior classical women and 2nd place, junior musical theatre women); and tenor Eliott Player (1st place, freshmen classical men and 2nd place, freshmen musical theatre men). Each of these five students will receive prize money to advance to the Southeastern Regional NATS auditions at Georgia State University in Atlanta March 24–25. This competition will serve as the gateway for the National Student Auditions, which will be held this summer at the University of Colorado in Boulder.
