Notice body

The Office of Information Technology encourages Auburn University students, faculty and staff to be aware of falling victim to a check scam. A recently reported scam in Auburn involves individuals cashing checks in exchange for cash on-the-spot. The check scam tries to have individuals accept a check in exchange for cash. One should assume he or she is being scammed if someone says, "Let me write you a check for $1,000 and you take it to your bank, cash it and give me $500. You can then keep $500 for yourself."

If a person is scammed, a few days after this conversation, he or she will get a notice from his or her own bank which says the check that you deposited was returned for insufficient funds. The bank may add fees. More information is online.
