The Provost’s Office will host an open forum on the plans to develop an Auburn Memorial on Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Student Center, room 2227.

Most recent and current SGA presidents Logan Powell and Walker Byrd have advocated the development of a memorial within the Garden of Memory — a memorial site initially created in the 1950s with support from the Garden Club of Alabama to honor Alabama veterans. The SGA has proposed expanding the initial memorial concept to the “Auburn Memorial”, an all-encompassing memorial for all members of the Auburn community (students, faculty, staff, alumni and veterans).

At its June 2015 meeting, the Board of Trustees approved initiation of the project and selection of an architect to begin design work. The project is currently in the design phase, and feedback from the campus community is an important component of the development process. Current schematics include a memorial plaza location with stanzas excerpted from the Auburn Creed, improved and enlarged lawn space for memorial events, a reinforced path network for both circulation and ADA access, and pond and stream enhancements. Costs to fund the project include $1.25 million, with the majority to be raised by the SGA, of which currently more than $1 million has already been secured.

Moderated by Associate Provost and Vice President for Student Affairs Bobby Woodard, the forum will include a formal presentation of the Auburn Memorial concept by SGA and Facilities Management, followed by time for questions and comments. All members of the campus community are encouraged to attend.
