Research conducted by Jinyan Fan, from the Department of Psychology in the College of Liberal Arts, was chosen by the Greater Good Science Center at University of California at Berkeley as one of the Top 10 Insights from the “Science of a Meaningful Life.”

Fan is an author of the published study, "Nice Thinking! An Educational Intervention That Teaches Children to Think Gratefully," and the study was featured by UC Berkeley for its encouraging results of a curriculum Fan and his colleagues developed to teach gratitude to elementary school students. Fan and his colleagues found that children’s awareness of the social-cognitive appraisals of beneficial social exchanges (i.e., grateful thinking) can be strengthened and that this, in turn, makes children more grateful and benefits their well-being in terms of increased general positive affect.
