Backscheider part of Oxford roundtable discussion on Inchbald

Paula Backscheider, English professor and Philpott-Stevens Eminent Scholar, will be a panelist in an online roundtable discussion of Elizabeth Inchbald on Monday, Aug. 2. "A Roundtable in Celebration of Elizabeth Inchbald," will mark the bicentenary of Inchbald's death on Aug. 1, 1821. In addition to Backscheider, the panel will include director Colin Blumenau, and writer and actress Katie Bonna. As part of the discussion, there will footage from the 2008 production of "Wives as They Were and Maids as They Are," at the Theatre Royal, Bury St. Edmunds.

British novelist, playwright, and actress Elizabeth Inchbald (1753–1821) was among the first women to gain notoriety as a playwright. Drawing on her experiences on the stage, Inchbald also became the first prominent British female theater critic. Her work is primarily remembered for her deft use of comedy and for her expression of contemporary social issues in her works.
