School of Industrial and Graphic Design students explore social justice through design

Auburn students in the School of Industrial and Graphic Design, or SIGD, at the College of Architecture, Design and Construction, or CADC, are exploring social justice through design.

SIGD faculty Joyce Thomas and David Smith began teaching classes that focus on the theme of social justice during the fall 2020 semester, and that innovative curriculum has continued in 2021. The classes featured projects ranging from the re-design of product packages featuring racially or ethnically stereotyped images to ones that addressed issues like ageism, law enforcement community relations, bias toward people with disabilities and healthy food access for historically marginalized communities.
