Patrick Thompson, special collections curator for the Davis Arboretum at Auburn University, has collaborated with the Huntsville Botanical Garden to make an impact in helping save a rare type of oak tree from extinction.

Thompson and the Huntsville Botanical Garden teamed up to produce the 2020 Tree Gene Collection Report on Quercus boyntonii, also known as the Alabama Sandstone Oak or Boynton Oak. The rare oak, which is found only in Alabama, needs the highest levels of conservation efforts to save it from extinction.
