The School of Nursing is holding a virtual nursing camp via Zoom this week for 55 high school students around the country.

“Although we are disappointed that the camp cannot be held in person this year, the virtual camp has allowed for a more diverse population,” Kendall Henderson, assistant clinical professor who is organizing the camp, said. “We have campers from all over the United States, including Alabama, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas participating in the camp.”

Sessions will be conducted by current nursing students who are in Albertville, Alexander City, Birmingham, Dothan, Fairhope, Huntsville, Mobile, Phenix City and Scottsboro, Alabama, as well as Baltimore, Maryland and Austin, Texas.

“Their creativity is astounding, considering they had to reinvent stations and content that were meant to be taught and demonstrated in person,” Henderson said. “In addition to the third and fourth semester students, some of our fifth semester students and nursing alumni are speaking throughout the week.”

Besides scheduled lectures on pediatrics and labor and delivery, campers will learn about nurses’ role in triage, ICU, NICU/ICU and various areas including assessment, sensory, surgery, venipuncture and pediatric and case studies.
